The short answer
How much does a polished concrete floor cost?
There is no single number, and any company quoting one without seeing your floor is guessing. What a polished concrete floor costs comes down to three things: which system your substrate needs, how much floor there is, and what condition it starts in.
Across the five systems we install, that works out at roughly £40 to £200 per m². The ranges on this page assume a straightforward domestic or light commercial project with reasonable access. They are a budgeting guide, not a quotation.

What each system costs
Five systems, five different jobs. The one you need is decided by what is already on the floor, not by preference alone - which is why the survey comes before the price.

Note on these figures: ranges are indicative and exclude VAT, substrate remedial work and access equipment. Smaller areas sit at the upper end of each range. For a fixed figure, request a survey.
What moves the price
Six things that change the number
Two floors of the same size can price very differently. These are the variables that do the moving, in roughly the order they matter.
System specified
A grind and seal on a sound slab is a different job from a full mechanical polish through the diamond grit sequence with densifier, and a new poured floor is different again. The system is usually the second largest swing in a quote.
Substrate condition
Cracks, old adhesive, paint residue, poor flatness or an unsuitable slab all need addressing before polishing. This is quoted separately once we have surveyed the floor, because there is no honest way to price it blind.
Aggregate exposure
A salt and pepper finish removes minimal material. Full aggregate exposure means cutting deeper, which takes more passes, more diamonds and more time on site.
Colour and dye
Natural grey is the baseline. Dyed floors, integral pigments and decorative additions such as mother of pearl or coloured aggregate add both material and labour.
Access and hours
Upper floors, restricted access, live trading environments and out-of-hours working all add cost. A ground-floor project with a clear run for machinery is the cheapest to deliver.

Whole-life cost
Cheaper than tile or wood?
Upfront, usually not. Over the life of the floor, usually yes - and it is the second number that matters if you intend to stay in the building.

Across the systems we install, prices run from around £40 to £200 per m². An overlay or a mechanical polish on a sound existing slab sits at the lower end; a new poured floor or a microcement system sits at the upper end. Smaller areas carry a higher rate per m², because mobilisation, machinery transport and setup are largely fixed costs. We provide a written fixed-price quote after a site survey.
A significant part of any polished concrete project is fixed: transporting industrial grinders, setting up dust extraction, protecting adjacent areas and mobilising the team. Those costs are the same for a 20m² utility room as for a 200m² open-plan extension, so on a small floor they are spread across far fewer square metres.
Upfront, usually not. Over the life of the floor, usually yes. A correctly installed and maintained polished concrete floor performs for 25 to 30 years or more with only periodic re-sealing, where ceramic tile is typically replaced every 15 to 20 years, LVT every 10 to 15 and carpet every 5 to 10. There are no replacement cycles, no disposal and no repeated disruption.
The main variables are floor area, the system specified, the condition and flatness of the existing substrate, the level of aggregate exposure you want, whether any colour or dye is used, and site access. Substrate remedial work is quoted separately after survey rather than estimated blind.
Not usually. Microcement runs from around £85 to £200 per m², which overlaps the polished concrete range rather than undercutting it. It is specified where a new pour is not practical rather than purely to save money: at 2 to 3mm thick it goes over the existing surface, so it avoids break-out, disposal and the build-up a new slab would add.
